Mischief Under the Mistletoe: Holiday Hotties Just Waiting To Be Unwrapped is an eBook anthology, offering 19 contemporary romances for under a dollar. It is only available in the Amazon Kindle format, but apps are available to read Kindle eBooks on any device.
I was not sure what to expect with this collection. I will admit my first thought was that it might be self-published dreck, or a lot of shorts. A large number of negative reviews did not help, though apparently the initial release was an incorrect file, resulting in people receiving one story repeated many times instead of the full set. That has since been corrected, but there is no way to remove the negative reviews, even though they were caused by a file error. There are still a few problems with the eBook conversion, making it difficult to access specific chapters, but this is not a obstacle to reading the stories.
I am happy to report that Mischief Under the Mistletoe is a great deal. I’ve only read the first five, but wanted to post a review while the collection is still available. First, at least some of these authors are well established, and the story telling is more or less fine. Second, lengths vary, but these are not shorts or intro chapters. The heat level is what you might expect from the title and cover image – a few sex scenes per story.
There is a mix of styles and plots, which means enough variety to keep it interesting. The first one is sweet, but this business of never forgetting each other after seven years, yet not doing anything about it, is a bit of a stretch. The second one is the basic millionaire playboy who falls in love with the ordinary girl plot. It’s enriched by a suspense subplot, but why are both the guns Glocks, and how does Charlie recognize them as such? In the third one, where Abbie must choose between two men, I couldn’t help thinking that this story would have worked better as an MMF romance. Fly Me to the Moon is deliciously dark, though perhaps resolved a little too easily. It has some powerful scenes. Ruck is told entirely from the guy’s perspective, and it’s a friends into lovers story, but I didn’t care for the guy at all, and wondered why anyone else would.
So far the stories have been a little heavy on the bad boys for my tastes, but they’ve made bus rides and work breaks more enjoyable. The collection is like a box of chocolates – you may not like everything, but that’s okay, and for the price, it’s practically a gift. Who doesn’t want a free box of chocolates?
